Thérèse and Laurent, entwined in a forbidden romance, believe they have evaded justice after Thérèse's feeble husband dies in a train accident. However, their sense of security crumbles under the pressure of a blackmailer's threats and the silent judgment of Thérèse's mother-in-law.
